With a masters degree in Engineering Geology from Imperial College and 20 years’ experience in geotechnical and geo-environmental investigation and consultancy, Matthew has been involved with numerous ground investigations for a wide variety of developments in a range of geological conditions. He has gained particular experience in carrying out complex geotechnical investigations for deep basement constructions in central and west London, which has also provided him with extensive experience of self-boring pressuremeter testing, CPT and seismic testing to measure the in-situ stiffness and strength of the London Clay.

Matthew’s technical expertise lies in developing robust ground models, advising on site investigations strategy and delivery, and leading the delivery of Basement Impact and Ground Movement Assessments, foundation design and third-party asset protection. He has also completed numerous specialist geotechnical analyses, including analysis of an unstable slope on an historical landslip in Hythe, Kent and an analysis of the effects of disused military tunnels on a new development in Chatham.

In 2012, he obtained chartered status from the Geological Society of London, reflecting his level of experience and understanding of geological materials. Matthew has also been a member of the AGS Geotechnical Working Group and was involved with the Underpinning Focus Group, which was formed in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth to better understand the ground movements associated with underpinned basements.

Matthew previously completed a four-month placement with the design team of Cementation Skanska Ltd, where he gained valuable experience in the design and analysis of piled foundations and piled retaining walls, and recently spent a year working within the Geotechnical Team at AKT II, where he was a key contributor on a number of landmark projects.
